Gianfranco Soldera leaves the DOCG Brunello

After the terrible event at the end of last year, life continues and Gianfranco Soldera makes some major decisions.

Because of the pressure of some major players in the Montalcino region to mix other grape varieties than Sangiovese Grosso in the Brunello make his trust in the appellation disappear.

He doesn't believe the consortium can hold on to the 100% rule to only allow the Sangiovese Grosso as the only grape variety for the Brunello wine.

Therefore from now on he is leaving the consortium and bring his wines on the market as IGT.

See pres release below.

I know there is a big discussion going on to put other grapes into the wines because of some major market players, but if so we wont have anymore the pure Brunello wines but poor international wines as there are so much Super-Tuscans.
As a promoter for pure Italian wines made from pure Italian grapes, this sort of wines wont make part anymore of my personal selection of wines.

Montalcino,  22nd March 2013

Yesterday, 21st March, the trial was held regarding the damage we suffered last December. The judge accepted the abbreviated trial procedure requested by the accused and accepted the prosecutor’s request in full, sentencing Mr Andrea Di Gisi to four years of imprisonment for the crimes committed.

I also communicate that today I have sent my irrevocable resignation, effective from today’s date, to the president of the consortium for Brunello di Montalcino Wine, Mr Fabrizio Bindocci, and the members of the Board of Directors.

We are pleased to announce that, after having suspended sales following the serious damage that occurred (as of our communication of 9th December 2012), which we decided on in order to avoid speculation, from the end of this month we will start delivering our wine once again.

In order to clarify certain misinformation that is circulating, we would like to inform you that the following wine in the cellar was saved at the time of the damage:

  1. The part of the 2006 vintage that already been bottled and
  2. A limited part of the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 vintages, which will be sold in the next few years.

We would like to confirm our family’s steadfast desire to continue producing wine exclusively from the grapes of our Sangiovese vines at Case Basse.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Regards,

Gianfranco Soldera.
